Lee Williamson’s smart finish was enough to secure a 1-0 win as the Grove beat Wisbech Town in the preliminary round of the BuildBase FA Trophy.
Both teams had their chances during the encounter, but it was the home side that came out on top as Williamson’s 45th minute finish inside the box was the difference.
However, Kidsgrove will be disappointed that they couldn’t kill the game off as all three home substitutes squandered one-on-one situations with Wisbech keeper Sam Wilson who was the stand-out individual for the visitors.
Anthony Malbon hit his second woodwork in just as many weeks just after the half hour mark as the skipper smartly held the ball up in the opposition box after a scrappy tussle, which then led the Grove number 10 striking the ball only for the visiting keeper to be saved by his right post.
After an intense start to the second half, manager Ryan Austin made some astute changes as James Jennings, Kyle Blake and Kingsley Adu Gyamfi were on the end of clear-cut chances that should have been put away.
Jennings’ effort on goal from within the 6-yard box was saved miraculously by Wisbech keeper Wilson as was Gyamfi’s left footed strike from just inside the box both chances coming just before the 90-minute mark.
The Grove’s next fixture will be away at Lincoln United as Austin’s side attempt to carry their impressive form of only 1 loss in 10 games in the Bet Victor Northern Premier League.
