Lincoln United 0 v Kidsgrove Athletic 5 report by Ben Durber.

Kidsgrove Athletic comfortably came out five-nil winners at Ashby Avenue against ten man Lincoln United in their first league game since the 14th September.

A brace from both Captain Anthony Malbon and former Silverdale Midfielder Kingsley Adu-Gyafmi and a further goal by winger Kyle Diskin ensured that the Grove sealed a vital 3 points which help them to move up 2 places into 15th.

The encounter began quite scrappy with the hosts choosing to play a high pressing game as they allowed Kidsgrove no time and space on the ball and it was the hosts that in fact created the first opportunity of the day. It came from forward Jack Wightwick whose shot from outside the box was well saved by the feet of Grove goalkeeper Kieron Harrison .

Moments later the home side did have the ball in the back of the net when Danny North was slipped in to put the ball in the back of the net but he was adjudged to be offside by the linesman.

Then on the 26th minute mark Lee Williamson really should have given the visitors the lead when he was teed up by Diskin on the penalty spot but he blazed the ball over the stand when really he should have done much better.

A minute before the half-hour mark arguably the most significant decision of the match occurred when Mark Gray was given his marching orders for a high challenge on Adu-Gyamfi even though he may have won the ball resulting in outrage from the Lincoln United bench.

Once this happened the hosts immiediately sat in deeper and formed more of a defensive shape. Consequently, this caused more pressure from the Grove attack and that pressure told when they broke the deadlock a minute before the break.

Defender Alex Morris went on a brilliant individual run that was unchallenged by any Lincoln defender. Morris found his way into his box where he got a shot away that was blocked but the follow up fell to Diskin inside the six yard box who smashed the ball into the roof of the net rewarding the away side a goal to the good at the break.

After the restart the Grove came out firing and took the lead within a minute but it can’t be said to be anything special. A corner was swung in from the left, Lincoln made a meal of clearing their lines and Malbon as always was there to latch onto the loose ball and scramble the ball over the line.

Then only 7 minutes into the second period Adu-Gyamfi grabbed a third goal when he converted from a Diskin cutback despite efforts by the Lincoln defence to clear the ball off the line. Although it does have to be said that, Nicholson arguably could have done better to prevent the goal from going in.

In the 57th and 60th minute, the Grove grabbed a fourth and fifth goal retrospectively first through Malbon who slotted home from just inside the box after he was set up by Adu-Gyafmi. Then only 3 minutes later Adu-Gyamfi got his second of the day when he slid the ball past Nicholson, who again should have done better from a Williamson cutback from the right hand side.

That is how the scoreline remained but the visitors did have chances to add more most notably through Adu-Gyamfi who headed over the bar when unmarked inside the box and via Malbon who worked room for himself but his curling effort rattled the crossbar instead of the back of the net.

Late on Lincoln United did have a few chances to grab a consolation goal especially through a North effort that was well saved by Harrison then someohow the followup went the wrong side of the post. Then as the game was entering stoppage time defender Michael Jacklin was found inside the 6 yard box but his effort sailed over the bar not that it would have made any difference anyway as Kidsgrove ran away as five nil winners.
