“We can’t have any fear, if we do get chances we have to be clinical. It’s the FA Cup anything is possible.”

Skipper Anthony Malbon has sent out a battle cry as The Grove face Gateshead in the Emirates FA Cup Third Preliminary Round on Saturday.

The Grove are looking to build on a remarkable FA Cup run so far, highlighted by the 2-1 win away at Matlock in the last round.

After unfortunately succumbing to financial difficulties, Gateshead were demoted to the National League North last season. However, they have found their feet again under former Newcastle defender Mike Williamson.

Gateshead currently sit 10th in the National League North and have also produced some emphatic results in the cup this year; dismantling Ramsbottom 6-0 in the previous round.

However, record goal-scorer Malbon is brimming with confidence ahead of the fixture:

“Gateshead are a very good side, I’ve played against them many times myself but they do concede goals. If we do get chances, we have to be clinical.”

If the Grove progress into the next round, it’ll match the 2011-12 & 2018-19 record of reaching the 4th qualifying round.

Malbon still rues the missed opportunity of last years exit against Hartlepool and vows the squad can’t give the higher division teams any respect.

“We can’t go there and show them much respect as we’ll end up regretting the chance in playing in such a fixture.

"When we went there (Hartlepool) last season, we gave them too much respect in the first half an hour and came off kicking ourselves because it was a chance to get something out of the game; or at the very least a replay.”

The game is sure to be a hard-fought contest in front of a large home crowd. We hope to see as many Grove fans there as possible to hopefully see the Grove progress and get ever closer to the first round proper.

Come on the Grove!
