Anthony Malbon was captain fantastic as Grove put five past title chasers Runcorn Linnets.
A hat trick from the skipper along with goals from Kyle Diskin and Chris Budrys condemned The Linnets to their heaviest defeat of the season.
Grove got off to the dream start as they opened the scoring with a wonder goal within the first 15 minutes. Malbon was able to turn his man on the edge of the area before curling home a beauty past the despairing Jordan Perrin.
Just after the half-hour mark Grove doubled their lead and it was that man Malbon again. Lee Williamson played a superb ball into the area that was flicked up onto the crossbar, but Malbon was on hand again to head home the rebound.
After a shaky end to the first half from Grove, they opened the second half in the best possible way with a goal within the first 2 minutes. Rhys Thompson whipped in a delicious out-swinging corner and Chris Budrys rose highest to nod home.
With just under 10 minutes left on the clock, Malbon completed his hat trick after Perrin came off his line to meet the striker, only to make a hash of his challenge and allow the captain to curl in a shot from the edge of the area into an open net, sparking chants of “we’ve got Malbinho” among the Grove faithful.
With the score looking set to finish at 4-0 two minutes from time, Diskin channeled his inner David Beckham when he spotted Perrin off his line and lobbed the on-loan Wigan keeper to add an emphatic fifth for Ryan Austin’s men.
The win moves Grove up one place to 11th as they look to secure a top half finish, while Runcorn’s title hopes take a massive dent as they are overtaken in second place by Radcliffe.
Grove will be hoping to build on this dominant display with a trip to local rivals Leek Town in mid-week up next.
