Match Preview: Runcorn Linnets vs Kidsgrove Athletic

By Rob Glover

The Grove travel to high-flying Runcorn in search of a valuable three points.

Kidsgrove Athletic return to action for the first time this month following last weekend's postponed fixture, as the Grove make the trip to Cheshire to take on promotion chasing, Runcorn Linnets.

The Linnets too found themselves with a free weekend as bad weather prevented their clash with Market Drayton, however the two sides look set to be undeterred this weekend as Runcorn look to close the six point gap to league leaders, Atherton Colleries.

The Liverpool based outfit have enjoyed a brilliant first half of the season and find themselves 2nd in the Evo-Stik West table after 25 games. Michael Ellison's side have won 15 games already and have racked up 49 points so far to sit two points clear of Radcliffe Boro in third.

The Grove meanwhile sit 12th and firmly in mid-table, four points behind Widnes in 11th. The Blues do however have up to four games in hand on the teams around them, having suffered a congested fixture list.

Ryan Austin will be encouraged by the Blue's recent performances and will be hoping his men can thwart the Linnet's charge to the top.

Last time out, the Linnets were sent crashing out of the Integro League Cup quarter-finals thanks to a 3-1 defeat at the hands of league counterparts Trafford. Ryan Gibson scoring what proved to be a consolation for the home side.

Prior to the Grove's abandoned fixture away at Kendal Town, the Blues secured a hard earned 2-1 victory over local rivals, Leek Town, with Anthony Malbon levelling the scores before Kyle Diskin's last minute winner sent the home fans in to raptures.

The two sides meet for the first time this season but are set to meet again for a second time in quick succession, Runcorn visit the Novus Solutions Stadium on 2nd March 2019.

Last week saw the Grove bolster their squad as Stoke City youngster, James Butler rejoined the club for a second spell at the Novus, on a work experience loan until the end of the season. Butler will be hoping to find his way in to the starting eleven this weekend.
